  1. In fact, l-methionine is an essential amino acid, but not d-methionine. D-amino acids are not part of normal metabolism, just the L-versions. The dl-mixtures are cheaper, which is why manufacturers use them instead of the pure L, but I consider it a misrepresentation to state that “dl-methionine” is essential; only the l-methionine is. I also do not like it when manufacturers state only “vitamin E,” instead of exactly what they use. There are numerous E isomers with varying activity, and in humans, the d-alpha, long thought of as “the” vitamin E, displaces one of the other isomers, the gamma isomer, in the body, which is deleterious. Mixed natural tocopherols are best, but, due to cost considerations, I doubt that very many manufacturers use those. One good thing about their pellets is that, unlike their Avi-Cakes®, they do not contain propylene glycol; Lafeber uses more propylene glycol than molasses in their formula, but they don’t advertise about the propylene glycol. They also use more white sugar than molasses, but they don’t advertise that either.

Thanks for sharing that information about l-methionine versus d-methionine. What do you think of Totally Organic Pellets?

      • R Bray says:

TOPS pellets do not contain added vitamins, so there is no vitamin D-3 or B-12, two essential vitamins which are missing in a fresh food diet. All captive, indoor parrots need vitamin D-3 for Calcium utilization. Birds that are outdoors in the sunshine (the sun is only strong enough part of the year in more northern locations) can produce the vitamin D they need from the sun exposure.

What if you mix TOPS and Harrison’s? What do you feed your birds?
